Maths Focus Group

Date: 24/04/2014                                            Time: 10.30-11.45

Attendees: Majella Downes-O’Dea (Supervisor Big Teds), Janet Coutes Dunne, Leigh Fyffe, Pamela Gray and Jane Gregson (Parents)

Agenda:
1.    Majella introduced herself and thanked everyone for coming. The rest of the group introduced themselves, stating their name and a little bit about their children.

2.   Majella spoke about her aims for the group and what she hopes to achieve and her reason for doing this.
·        A: To involve parents in the nursery
·        B: To help parents to recognise their own skills in supporting their childrens early learning.
- Majella asked if everyone agreed with the aims and if there was anything they wanted to add.
- Everyone agreed and had nothing more to add.

3.   Majella spoke to the group about the Curriculum for Excellence, especially Maths and Numeracy.
-      Brief overview of Curriculum
-      Handed out copies of: - Assessment and Tracker (Maths)
                                   - Supporting my child with Maths
                                   - Curriculum for Excellence Maths &
                                      Numeracy School  
4.   Mind-map 3 areas:
-      At home
-      In the community
-      Out shopping

Evaluation
·        Excellent group discussion relating to Maths and Numeracy.
·        Parents identifying what they could do to help their children.
·        Parents recognising what they already do.
·        Swapping parenting skills.
·        Getting to know each other.
·        Open, honest and fun.

·        Excellent verbal feedback from parents.
